"Shrimp Die Young" was inspired by the fishing village of Skagaströnd in northern Iceland, where I spent a month in 2009 at the Nes Artist Residency. The village has several abandoned fishing plants including a plant for the shrimp industry. Some of the fishing is done off the coast in smaller vessels, but most of the catching, processing and freezing is now done out at sea in huge trawlers. While it is possible to get fresh fish in town, most fish is frozen. I found it ironic that I had more access to fresh seafood in New York than I did in a fishing village.
The music in this piece is by Austrian artist and musician Bernadette Reiter who was also a resident artist in Skagaströnd.
